Friday

Evening

Raise a glass to the weekend at Rocky River Vineyards. From its first muscadine planting in 2003, this family-owned vineyard has been tending to the beautiful 45-acre property, where guests are invited to sip and sample award-winning wines. A tasting might include pours of Chardonnay, Cabernet and Merlot, as well as hot mulled wine in winter or a refreshing wine slushie in summer — plus, tastes of sweet muscadine wine, of course. And don’t miss the live music, which kicks off every weekend from April to October.

Saturday

Morning

The Midland Farms Store opens at 9 a.m. and you’ll want to be sure you’re there bright and early — and armed with an iced coffee or latté — to browse the farm’s astonishing array of yummy foods. Look for local cheeses and honey; pasture-raised pork; beef and chicken; syrups, jams and jellies; plus barbecue sauces, seasonings and rubs. If you time your visit to coincide with Midland Farms’ vendor sale, you can round out your shopping list of farm-fresh goodies with handmade arts and crafts.

Find more local treats at Midland Provisions. Opened in October 2024, this store is stocked with delicious products from North Carolina-based small businesses and offers indoor seating and a dog-friendly picnic area.

Afternoon

While away the afternoon on a family-friendly excursion to Reed Gold Mine, an impressive historic site that preserves the location of a 1799 gold discovery — the first documented discovery in the United States. Today, visitors are welcome to venture deep underground to explore the mine’s tunnels on a guided tour, peruse gold exhibits in the on-site visitor center, learn the fascinating history of the mine, check out displays of vintage mining equipment and even pan for gold.

Sunday

Morning

Rise and shine for an invigorating morning hike — or jog, for those who want to pick up the pace — along the Riverbend Farm Trail. The out-and-back path totals 1.6 miles as it weaves through dense woods and traces the edge of the gentle Rocky River. Mountain bike enthusiasts can enjoy an early ride through six miles of trails plus a skills area at Rob Wallace Park.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to D’Anna’s Kitchen. This lively restaurant is a favorite among locals and it’s easy to see why. The menu is chock-full of goodies such as pancakes, breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches and Southern classics like country fried steak.

Afternoon

Conclude your Midland getaway with a serene paddle on Rocky River Blueway. Set out for an easy flat-water excursion on a paddleboard, kayak or canoe, following the river’s flow from its start at Pharr Family Preserve trail to the Riverbend Farm Trail — the very same spot as your hike earlier this morning.
