Mount Pleasant Historic District

On the National Register of Historic Places, the Mount Pleasant Historic District offers lovely old homes, churches, museums and mills. This district retains several mid-19th-century buildings of the Western Carolina Male Academy established in 1852 including the 1858 two-story brick Greek Revival Society Hall, the New Dormitory (largest building on campus), and the conservative Greek Revival style Mathias Barrier house. The handsome threestory Main Building houses the Eastern Cabarrus Historic Museum and provides a glimpse of mid-1800s to early 1900s Cabarrus County life. Open March through October on Sunday and Monday and for special events in December, admission to the museum is free during regular hours.
