Mount Pleasant
Cabarrus County’s smallest town is packed with big experiences that are sure to create lasting memories.
Located in beautiful Eastern Cabarrus County on the high spot between Dutch Buffalo Creek and Adams Creek, Mount Pleasant is surrounded by rolling hills, farmland and forests. The town’s history is everywhere: on plates and in glasses, along downtown streets and outdoor trails, at antique destinations and inside restored landmarks.
The Historic District
History hounds, you’re in luck: The Mount Pleasant Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and it’s a trove of treasures. The properties in the district showcase the town’s growth from a college village to a rural textile community and feature an impressive collection of buildings and homes with a wide variety of architectural styles including Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne.
Among the district’s mid-19th-century buildings are the former Western Carolina Male Academy, established in 1852, which became North Carolina College in 1859 and finally the Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute in 1903. The school closed in 1933, but today the handsome three-story Main Building houses the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society Museum which provides a glimpse of mid-1800s to early 1900s Cabarrus County life. Open on Saturdays from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. from March through mid-December, admission to the museum is free during regular hours.
